Skateboarding, the South Bank and the threat to Public Space

Listen in as I talk about The South Bank Undercroft on MONOCLE WEEKLY. This small corner of the South Bank is under threat in the renovation project for one of the most successful public spaces in the heart of London. The undercroft has been owned by the skateboarding community for over a decade but now the space has been assigned for new retail opportunities as the complex gets a face lift. This is not just a question of skating in the city but of the continual loss of public spaces – the commons – where we are allowed to be ourselves and enjoy the city:
